Special Collection Exhibit - Artists Books

The Book as Art:

A selection of works by contemporary book artists

The field of book arts is a vibrant sector in the world of contemporary art. Work produced by book artists is diverse in both form and content. The physical and conceptual variety characteristic of artists’ books is the focus of the current exhibition in Walker Library’s Special Collections Department which features works drawn from the Dimensional and Artists’ Books collection.

Artists’ books have a rather curious dual nature. They are part of the visual world of art but, at the same time, rooted in the functional world of books and text. If we envision a line with “art” at one end and “book” at the other, many artists’ books fall somewhere in the middle, incorporating properties from both sides of the scale.  The 21 works on display in Special Collections represent various points on the book arts continuum and incorporate a wide range of materials, structures and subjects but share one important characteristic—they are compelling, expressive objects.

All of the books in this exhibit are part of The Dimensional and Artists’ Books Collection, an eclectic assembly of works which also includes pop-up, movable and miniature books. In various ways, items in this collection explore the character of the book and the nature and boundaries of its form.

The exhibit, which runs through May of 2015, will be open during Special Collections’ regular hours, Monday through Friday from 8:30 - 4:30. 

Dance Performance in Library Atrium

A dance performance of Loie Fuller’s “La Mer” in the atrium of the library is Thursday, March 19th, at 3:30pm. 

This piece was staged by dance historian/reconstructor Jessica Lindberg with support from the Distinguished Lecture Committee. The Women in Dance students will perform the piece March 26, 27, 28 at the Tucker Theatre as part of MTSU Dance Theatre’s spring concert.

What is a Research Method?

Research Methods are the systematic tools used to conduct research. Basically, they are the rules researchers follow to collect information in order to seek an answer to their research question.

What does SAGE Research Methods do?

SAGE Research Methods (SRM) is an online collection of books and other full-text materials that provide authoritative information on how to perform hundreds of research methods. The how-tos for carrying out every step of your research project are here.

You can find great coverage in SRM on all steps of the research process, such as writing a research question, conducting a literature review, and writing up the findings. You will also find short introductions and lengthy explorations of hundreds of research methods used in the social sciences.

For faculty:

If you’re overseeing a student research project, thesis, or dissertation, you can direct students to SRM to help with every step of the research process

All of the content on SRM is designed to instruct readers new to a method or a concept in how to employ that method or concept themselves in their own research. As such, SRM is the perfect resource for those teaching Research Methods courses. You can curate reading lists for your students by creating a Methods List and setting it to public. On Display in the Library Atrium

A collection of 6 posters highlighting some of Dr. Maya Angelou's most famous poems are on display in the Walker Library atrium through March 27th. The Library has partnered with the June Anderson Center to celebrate National Women's History Month.
