Sesquicentennial of the Civil War
Today marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter in South Carolina and the next day the fort was surrendered, launching the Civil War. In Tennessee the sesquicentennial has special significance in large part due to the 1,462 battles fought in each of Tennessee 95 counties. Maps , timelines and Civil War trails in Tennessee help capture the scope of the fighting. Another unique factor for Tennessee is the sesquicentennial and Tennessee's connection, MTSU has a variety of resources including Gore Center's collection of Civil War resources and our digital collections Stones River Battlefield image collection. photo credit: Photograph.
